Volume 2, Issue 10

Rock The (Wireless) Vote!
Do the candidates you support support the wireless issues that matter to you? With U.S. election day nearing, "Ask The Experts" is on hiatus while we introduce you to five wireless regulatory issues you should know about.

ISSUE 1: "Tax on Talking"
A 3% federal excise tax on all telecommunications services was approved in 1898 to help finance the Spanish-American War. It remains in effect today. Reps. Robert Portman (R-OH) and Robert Matsui (D-CA) have sponsored a bill to repeal it. Read more.

ISSUE 2: "Jumpstart Broadband Act"
Wireless carriers license spectrum from the Federal Communications Commission to operate their networks. Wireless broadband networks that use the 802.1x protocol operate using unlicensed spectrum. As the limited bandwidth allocated for wireless broadband becomes saturated, additional spectrum is needed. Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and George Allen (R-VA) are sponsoring the "Jumpstart Broadband Act" that would provide this additional bandwidth. Read more.

ISSUE 3: 800 MHz: Radio Interference for First Responders
The hotly-contested 800MHz spectrum is currently used by some commercial entities including Nextel and also by public safety officials for radio communication. Police and fire officials have reported increasing interference in some locations and as a result the fight is on to re-allocate the 800MHz spectrum. Read more.

ISSUE 4: Preventing Wireless Spam
Many pundits predict that mobile spam will soon be as big a problem as it is on PCs. There are more than 170 million wireless subscribers in the U.S. alone, and almost all of them can receive unsolicited text messages. To prevent that, Congress is considering passage of the "Wireless Telephone Spam Protection Act," introduced last year by Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ). Read more.

ISSUE 5: Carrier Consolidation
The Federal Communications Commission has given provisional approval to Cingular to acquire AT&T Wireless. Will less competition be bad for consumers? Will the new wireless behemoth use its power fairly? The FCC has been considering these issues. One thing is for sure: you can expect further consolidation in the year ahead. Read more.

Tip of the Month: Wireless Escalations
What good are escalations if you can't take action in the field when issues escalate? Tie your existing Aeroprise alerts into your existing escalations to maximize the value of both.

Here's how:

From your Aeroprise Administration Console create an alert as you normally would: specify your trigger condition and assign the alert to users or groups. Then set your escalation to execute the Aeroprise alert using the command-line interface with the appropriate parameters. See your documentation to find the right parameters for your querystring. Your alert will fire in response to your escalation conditions and it will be formatted for the specific users and devices that receive it.
