Wireless Plays Critical Role in Crisis Response Efforts
You know wireless makes your life easier. You may not be as aware of how wireless is making life easier for others, particularly those victimized by natural disasters like last month's devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes.

According to search and rescue workers who have returned from storm-ravaged cities, there is so

much critical data that is essential to the recovery process that is inaccessible at rescue sites. Soon, it will be available via mobile devices.

First responders need access to the medical history of victims. They also need area maps, meteorological information, air quality measurements, resource quantities at triage points, and location coordinates for other aid workers. Accurate, timely information saves lives.

Wireless handheld devices are the
best tools for rescue workers burdened with heavy equipment and preoccupied with providing vital care for panicked victims and family members. Network availability is always an issue during times of crisis. To compensate for compromised networks, aid workers are increasingly being deployed with satellite-based phones. Additionally, carriers have developed response teams with special equipment to rapidly restore networks.

The major wireless carriers are contributing to the recovery effort in other ways as well. Verizon Wireless introduced a text-message campaign through which subscribers can text '2HELP' on their mobile phones to donate $5 per message to the American Red Cross. Sprint-Nextel deployed its emergency response team (ERT) to support the restoration effort. The ERT is equipped with 3,000 Nextel handsets, five satellite cells on light trucks and several support RVs. Additionally, Cingular is offering discounts on roaming charges and text messages to customers in affected areas.

No amount of support, wireless or otherwise, can heal the wounds caused by two of the worst natural disasters in US history. Even so, it is good to know that the technology we love is also helping save lives.

Aeroprise Index of Wireless Activity
This month, IOWA was up a modest 3.5% to 218.8. Wireless stock prices were up 4% despite the broader DOW Jones Industrial Average sliding 0.6% during the same period. Wireless headlines dipped this month, but we anticipate this is a calm before the storm of activity that this week's semi-annual CTIA show will generate.

Tip of the Month: Do It Yourself
You know device profiles determine how Aeroprise creates applications for different devices. You also know display styles determine how your wireless app is formatted. So what if you don't like what you see on your device? Maybe you need to switch your orientation from portrait to landscape or you just want to add your company's logo to your login page.

Here's what you do:

From your Administration Console click "Create Display Style." Pick a name and type a description. Next, pick the template you want to modify then pick the device you want your changes to affect. Make the desired changes to your template, click "Save", then log in from a user account and device that uses the style you created. That's it. If only your wireless bill was that easy to understand...
